Beat Movement Carries On

Common Sense, Common Law, commom tenderness & common tranquility, our means in Americato control the money munching war machine, bright lit industry everywhere digesting forests & excreting soft pyramids of newsprint...burping Napalm on palm rice tropic greenery.
-Ginsberg

It’s hard to believe the beatniks started talking about the destruction of humanity and the planet by materialism and capitalism so long ago. Decades later, the group chanting to save our forests is still a minority while the machines keep running day and night to cut down and cut out trees, animals, and people from their homes and habitats. They say change is slow and common sense isn’t so common. That seems to hold true in our case. To us, change seems slow now. We live in a world that is constantly trying to out-do itself, always a step ahead, everyone competing in everything imaginable, from the workplace to the tennis courts to the courtrooms. Everything is a game and everyone is a player going against one another to be the top dog.

In the end, our lives are short and pathetic compared to Planet Earth’s.  All this running around seems to be in vain, thinking we have something to achieve. We’re ants, worker bees, performing the same tasks every day in and out that take us nowhere in particular. We spend our time figuring out how to get along with everyone else (because we’re just so darn different). We spend it collecting material wealth that holds no true value in the end. We spend it in poverty, in depression. Waging war to claim a piece of land that’s for no one to have. All that will change, like everything else, this shall end as well.

The movement the Beatniks gave energy to has been growing rapidly in Earth years if not in our insignificant human years. The state of mind of the few has been carried through the generations and years to gain more momentum each year. The latest movement of Occupy Wall Street seems to have grown straight from the Beat generation’s womb and emerged after so many years of frustration and destruction. The people have finally been broken out their slumber. May the spirit of beat keep moving us forward into a more green and harmonious world.
