What is beatnik? I am having a hard time defining the term. It is either very diverse or misused in labeling various. Either that, or it has evolved greatly over the years and retained all elements of it's past. I would like to know how we go from THIS:

The way Jack Kerouac reads is amazing. It's so fast, like a stream of consciousness. He sounds like a race commentator. I read somewhere that he had said how much he likes James Joyce and that he felt that On The Road was his 'Ulysses' and only now listening to him read it I see what he meant.
